Patricia MacIntyre launched Hydro Health in November 1997 and found the Wellington area was more than ready to embrace the alternative health treatment that is colon hydrotherapy.

"I discovered that no-one was offering treatment nearby and realised there must be a vast pool of people in Wellington whose bowel problems required an alternative assistance that was not being offered by mainstream medicine," she says.

"As a qualified nurse I know of increasing numbers of people with bowel cancer and Hydro Health allowed me to promote colon hydrotherapy as a valuable preventative health option."

Colon hydrotherapy is the gentle infusion of water into the bowel under conditions that are safe. No chemicals or drugs are used. It is a very effective, relaxing method of washing the colon walls clean, getting rid of hardened residues particularly in bowel pockets, which cause toxins.

Mrs MacIntyre says the medical theory behind colon hydrotherapy is simple. "If you are carrying old, rotting waste residues in your bowel (and we all can) then the toxins that build up may poison your blood stream.

"Blood circulates through every organ and reaches every cell in the body. So, toxins in the blood can contaminate the entire body. To properly cleanse the blood tissue we must start by a thorough cleansing of the bowel. By removing the waste that causes the problem, we begin the process of body cleansing."

Symptoms which indicate someone's health may benefit from colon cleansing include constipation, irritable bowel, diverticulitis, colitis, diarrhoea and bloating, with all the pain and discomfort they entail.

Other possible symptoms include skin problems, sinus and catarrh, headaches, persistent tiredness, aching joints, lower back pain, candida, haemorrhoids, irritability, depression and mood swings.

"The numbers of people with bowel cancer are a cause for concern to us all," says Mrs MacIntyre. "Cancer of the colon is next to heart disease as one of the most frequent causes of death in New Zealand today.

"Colon hydrotherapy is not a cure. But it is a valuable procedure and treatment for a wide variety of different conditions. By soaking and releasing the old, toxic lining of the bowel, we remove a major source of disease in the body. In addition, we open up the bowel to a more efficient means of waste elimination and nutrient absorption, both of which are essential to any lasting healing process.

"Most people, when they find it is a comfortable and even a relaxing treatment, without any odour or mess, lose any apprehension," she says

"Patient confidentiality prevents me from giving case histories, but I am thrilled that I have been able to improve the health of many people, including some suffering long-term bowel problems."

Subsequently, Hydro Health has designed and developed its own unique speculum, which is used by practitioners worldwide.

This was followed by development of the Belly Ball, an aid to massaging the belly, to stimulate blood circulation and help improve bowel function.
